Bill Corkum’s Reflection on…faith and music
Christmas Season can be the Music Season for many people, and for people of faith good music and singing stirs inspiration, sometimes inspiring stronger and deeper than good feelings. Here’s what I recently discovered of music’s power.
Taize is a Christian community in France that promotes peace, and where daily worship includes short musical selections, often repeated. People come from all over the world to Taize for its community life and worship. The value of such simple music-based worship has been questioned by many. However music seeps through, where other expressions fail, as this story relates:
A woman doctor tells the story…“I have been working in the emergency service in Faluja, Iraq. One day during the fighting I had to operate on a man who would probably need to have both legs amputated. During that difficult operation I heard a melody with words in Latin. I didn’t understand, for I had to concentrate on the operation. The song became louder and louder; it sounded like a chorale; my colleagues – French, British, American, German, and Iraqi – were singing together.
Carried by the melody, I calmed down, and could even see a chance of saving the man’s legs. And finally, we succeeded. After the operation, I heard the French doctors saying that it was a song from Taize. I had never heard of Taize until then. From then on, the Taize songs accompanied me during operations, and I felt protected by God in some very dangerous situations. I am so grateful for music that draws me into God’s orbit of peace-making, even in places of disaster like Iraq.”
So, friends, discover the music that empowers you. Listen to it…sing to it…even if no one else is listening. It just might surprise you, how deep it goes.
